The Highland, glaciers and waterfalls in 5 days
SEE THE ITINERARY HERE BELOW
This journey starts with a visit to the amazing rhyolite area of Landmannalaugar which lies at the the center of the forbidding Southern highlands.
Our route takes us through the Þjórsárdalur Valley stopping at Hjálparfoss, one of Iceland’s loveliest waterfalls. We continue into the extraordinary multi-colored rhyolite mountain scape to the water-filled Ljotipollur crater, called the pearl of the highlands, and onto the hot springs of the Landmannalaugar oasis.
This is your opportunity to bathe in the natural hot waters or do a short guided hike before heading for active Mount Hekla, the queen of Icelandic volcanoes. If conditions allow we will drive to a height of 950 meters up the side of the volcano to capture the astounding views.
Stay the night in the area of Eyjafjallajokull.
Þórsmörk is a magnificent valley named after Þór (Thor), the god of Thunder.
The amazing nature of green valleys, mountains, clear water creeks, and majestic glacial rivers. You will be close up to the mighty glacier volcano Eyjafjallajokull. This is the volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused much air-traffic problems.
Þórsmörk is an oasis because of its unique location between 3 glaciers. The glaciers and mountains on all sides provide shelter from harsh weather conditions and because of that Þórsmörk has its own weather system.
The tour takes us to a wonderful canyon called Gljúfrabúi before making our way to the dramatic Gígjökull glacier tongue and Básar in Þórsmörk.
This drive is great fun as we cross glacial rivers and rough tracks.
Our next stop is Skógafoss before we make our way to the Vík area where we spend the night.
You start this day after a good breakfast driving towards Jökulsarlón glacier lagoon and Skaftafell. Here you will visit the amazing Skaftafell, one of Iceland’s most spectacular sights. This route is one of the most beautiful routes in Iceland, with fields of lava and surreal mountain scape. Skaftafell national park is amazing for hiking, a hike up to the beautiful waterfall Svartifoss, is an approx. 2 hour hike and surely worth it. The scenery in this area is quite surreal, and being in the surroundings of Europe’s largest glacier adds to the excitement.
